You know what’s a good day? Book box arrival day! My August FairyLoot arrived a couple of days before I was expecting it, which was a p great way to kick off the bank holiday weekend.
If you’re not familiar with FairyLoot, it’s a YA fantasy monthly book subscription box that comes with one new YA fantasy release and a selection of other bookish things, all fitting a monthly theme. August’s theme was Otherworlds (which, like, be still my tiny Narnia-loving heart). Let’s get into it!
- Peter Pan notebook from TJ Lubrano
- Westeros tea strainer (IT’S A SWORD!!) from FairyLoot
- Blackwing by Ed McDonald temporary tattoo
Look at that notebook! Look how gorgeous it is! Look how perfect it would be for, say, writing down all your Peter Darling feelings. (Or for writing a follow up Peter Darling book, if you’re Austin Chant. I mean. What. Who said that. Probably someone very subtle with some very lowkey emotions about Peter Darling.)
And A SWORD!! I mean. It’s a tea strainer. But IT’S A SWORD!! Full disclosure: I immediately poked Lal with this until the little rubber sword bent and then I pretended I had defeated her in combat.
- Aragorn and Arwen magnetic bookmarks from Paperly and Co
- Calligraphy sleep mask from FairyLoot
- Witchsoul Candle from Book and Nook
Apparently there were five different candles sent out in this month’s FairyLoot boxes, all pertaining to a different character in this month’s book, and FairyLoot worked with the author to design them, which is the coolest. The candle that came in the January box, designed to go with Caraval by Stephanie Garber, is still one of my favourite candles so I’m psyched for autumn to GET HERE ALREADY so I can try this one out 😀
Also, apparently three different sets of magnetic bookmarks went out – so you could get Arwen and Aragorn (in his least attractive look of the movies, lbr; you want Striker!Aragorn above freshly bathed King Aragon, like, you just do), Sam and Frodo, or Legolas and Thranduil. This reminded me that I used to have a printed out picture of Legolas and Aragorn stuck in the front of my school planner in year 9, because I have always been just the coolest. Juuuuuust the coolest. I am super into this style of magnetic character bookmarks, so this was a great inclusion for me!
- Northern Light art print from Melissa Nettleship
- A Court of Thorns and Roses necklace by Oh Panda Eyes
“What’s this print from?” I wondered, looking at it, and Lal was like, Moog. Moog, it literally has the northern lights in it. <.< SOME OF US HAVE CLEARLY CHOSEN TO BLOCK ALL KNOWLEDGE OF HIS DARK MATERIALS FROM OUR MINDS FOR EMOTIONAL SAFETY, OKAY. SOME OF US STILL HAVEN’T PUT THEIR HEART BACK TOGETHER FROM READING THE AMBER SPYGLASS. Anyway, the print is gorgeous and makes me want to a) reread all the books before the new one comes out later this year and also b) cry forever, because jesus fucking christ, His Dark Materials, just stamp on my heart now and be done with it.
I’m not a huge ACOTAR fan – I’ve read them all and I have… mixed… feelings – but I know a lot of people really really love the series, so having a necklace in there that I think a lot of people are going to really love is great. And it’s SO pretty. And it came in SUCH A GORGEOUS LITTLE BAG!
- Wicked Like a Wildfire by Lana Popovic
- August FairyLoot theme card
So, most months when the new FairyLoot theme is announced, I go and try and figure out which book we’ll be getting, but I hadn’t done that this month and this was a total surprise! I hear this is a fantasy about two sisters who live in a seaside town and both have the ability to manipulate beauty in different magical ways and then… something happens to their mum and they find out about a family curse? And the cover is so gorgeous, like, damn.
And that’s the August FairyLoot box! If you’d like to try FairyLoot out for yourself, you can sign up for the October box waiting list here and the October theme will be announced on September 4. I’m hoping for some Halloween-esque items! BRING ME ALL THE GOTHIC FANTASY ITEMS <— me, forever.
Moog Florin writes things, reads things, and likes things.
